ACRL IPEDS report

Are you having trouble with the ACRL IPEDS annual survey? Celus can calculate everything you need for you! 

What do you need to do to make it work?

1. First of all, CELUS has to have access to all usage data that you want included in the report. That means that you have either set up SUSHI harvesting and harvested usage data for the year you want to make the report for, or you manually uploaded the data. Learn more about how to check the data coverage in CELUS.

Now that your data are prepared, the fun can start. 

2. Choose the correct date range in the upper bar!

3. In the Analytics part of the left sidebar menu, click on "Specialized reports".

4. From the dropdown menu, choose ACRL IPEDS. 

5. Click on the "RUN REPORT" button. 

6. Great news! CELUS has just calculated the values for questions 60B, 61B, 62B, and 63B. You'll see the calculated values in bold on the right side. Additionally, you can click on each individual line to view the calculation process.

DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE CALCULATIONS

60B. Total Digital/Electronic Circulation or Usage

Value 60.B in the ACRL IPEDS survey is the total digital or electronic book and e-media usage of an academic library. This includes how many times e-books or e-media were accessed by library users during the fiscal year.

The formula for calculating the total digital/electronic circulation or usage (in terms of sessions) is:

    Total digital/electronic circulation or usage = 

                    Total full-text electronic downloads (TR) + Total database searches and sessions (IR_M1)

To calculate this value, you need to add up two things:

The total number of full-text electronic downloads, which means the number of times users downloaded or viewed full-text digital materials (TR).

The total number of database searches and sessions, which includes the number of times users accessed or used databases and other electronic resources, and the length of each session (IR_M1).

Once you have these two values, you can add them together to get the total digital or electronic usage for the year. This value is expressed in terms of sessions, which means it only counts full-text downloads and full database sessions.

In CELUS, you can see the numbers for each platform for each month, which are added together to get the final number. The TR tab shows platforms, for which TR reports are available, IR_M1 tab shows platforms providing the IR_M1 report. The third tab shows a summary of all (TR and IR_M1) platforms and the corresponding data.

61B. COUNTER Release 4 Circulation or Usage and 62B. - fallback report

If a library doesn't have access to COUNTER Release 5 reports, they should report the number of resource requests made from a specific computer address (line 61B) using the data from BR1 and MR1. If those statistics are not available, they can use the data from BR2 and MR2 and report it on line 62B instead. The different tabs show the data for the different platforms that provide BR1 and MR1 data, and the third tab combines all the data together. In the example screenshot, no platforms are missing TR, IR_M1, BR1, or MR1 reports, so question 62B is left blank.

63B. E-serials Usage (COUNTER 5, COUNTER 4, or other if needed)

Value 63B reports usage of electronic journals by library users. The TR reports are a primary source of data, with JR1 being the fallback report in case the TR report is not available. Same as with the previous calculations, CELUS shows data from the TR reports in the first tab, data from the JR1 report on the second tab and all data together on the third tab.
