COUNTER 5 usage statistics reports

Modified on Thu, 30 May at 3:31 PM

Release 5 of COUNTER designs four types of standard (master) reports that allow librarians to filter and configure their usage data to create customized views. Every publisher MUST provide reports in this format to be COUNTER-compliant. Master Reports include all relevant metrics and attributes. As these reports are complete sources of usage data, CELUS only harvests master reports (via SUSHI or manual data upload). Publishers are also required to provide Standard Views reports, which are filtered Master reports with pre-defined, mandatory filters. These reports do not include all the data available, and are therefore not complete "sources of truth", however, the goal of Standard Views is to provide a set of pre-filtered views of the Master Reports covering the most common set of library needs.

Note: It is not possible to harvest standard view reports (TR_J1 etc.) in CELUS to ensure accuracy of data.

Types of COUNTER 5 master reports (click the links to read more about the reports and their standard views):

1. Platform master report (PR)

2. Database master report (DR)

3. Title master report (TR)

4. Item master report (IR)

Format of COUNTER reports

All COUNTER reports have the same layout and structure:

The first 12 rows of a tabular COUNTER report contain the header, and the 13th row is always blank. The header information is presented as a series of name-value pairs, with the names appearing in Column A and the corresponding values appearing in Column B. All tabular COUNTER reports have the same names in Column A. Column B entries will vary by report.
